C. Dixon
London's Victoria and Albert Museum contains an oval miniature signed "C.D/se ipse [of himself] /p/1748." The signature and the style of the image resemble closely that of the miniature of Benjamin Franklin owned by the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston and recorded here. In Franklin's accounts is the note that he "Paid Mr. Dixon for B.F.'s picture £6.6.0" on October 31, 1757. That reference has made it possible to identify the artist who created his own miniature self-portrait and that of Franklin, and to establish a tentative working period of at least nine years at the middle of the century. No other record of C. Dixon has been found, at this date (2006).
