A friend of Franklin's, Col. Philip Ludwell was living with his family in London (Westminster) when Franklin came to London. Ludwell commissioned a portrait of Franklin from Mason Chamberlin, which was completed "just before" Franklin returned to Philadelphia, i.e., late July or early August, 1762. On Ludwell's death, it was inherited by his daughter, Lucy.
