Stephen Elmer
? - 1796?
English malt dealer and amateur artist. Elmer is known to have painted two portraits originally titled "The Politician," that have acquired the reputation of being images of Franklin. An engraving of the portrait was used as the frontispiece of a Life of Franklin in 1815, and a republication of the engraving with the subtitle "[DR.FRANKLIN]" in 1824 confirmed the attribution. See Sellers, pp. 277-281 for a thorough discussion.
