Daniel Smith
18th century English silversmith. Daniel Smith was apprenticed to Thomas Gladwin on November 6, 1740, and free on February 7, 1753. His first mark may have been entered as early as 1759; his second mark, in partnership with Robert Sharp, as early as 1763. This mark, which is Grimwade 3523, is on the milk jug given to Franklin by Dr. John Fothergill, his friend and associate. Ambrose Heal records Smith and Sharp as plateworkers from 1763 to 1789. Smith may have retired then, since Robert Sharp entered a mark alone on January 7, 1788.
