Antoine Borel
1743 - 18??
French painter and engraver. Hoping to dedicate his allegorical work (his drawing "l'Amérique Indépendante") to Franklin, he repeatedly requested that Franklin sit for a portrait so that his likeness might be imposed on the central figure in the work. Franklin declined the offer and suggested instead that Borel dedicate "l'Amérique" to the U.S. Congress. (Sellers pp. 120-21, 195-97)
