Louis Carrogis de Carmontelle
1717 - 1806
Artist, librarian, set designer, and dramatist. Tutor to the household of the Duc d'Orléans. At his death, a collection of about three hundred full-length portraits like the one he did of Franklin (ca. 1780) was found. Writing of them, Sellers says "accuracy and precision were combined with a charming spontaneity" (p. 214).
