David Martin
1737 - 1797
Scottish painter and engraver, born in Anstruther, Fife; and principal assistant of the Scottish painter Allan Ramsay. Martin painted Franklin in London, in a work shown at the opening of the Royal Society of Artists, April 22, 1767, as number 99. Franklin commissioned a copy for himself, sending it home in 1771. It has become one of the most celebrated images of Franklin.
