This print, based on Duplessis' famous portrait of Franklin owned by Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont, Franklin's patron and host, was probably issued to coincide with the exhibition of the Duplessis portrait in the French Royal Academy's Salon of 1779. Franklin frequently advised artists to use Duplessis' likeness rather than granting them individual sittings.
