According to NYHS records, this painting was based on a portrait by Duplessis owned by Alexandre Roslin. According to Sellers, a copy by Roslin from Duplessis was in the sale of Roslin's work in 1790. This painting was purchased in 1892 by the NYHS' Louis Durr Fund, and has been in their collection since that date.
