In colonial society, tankards were used as drinking vessels and as "banks"--a silver object, such as a tankard, could be kept more securely than silver coins. This baluster-shaped silver tankard was made for the Franklins by silversmith Elias Boudinot III, a neighbor of the family on Market Street for several years.
