Provenance
William Tatham was President of The Franklin Institute from 1879-85. Sometime during that period the sword was given to him by R. Meade Bache. Mr. Tatham would not accept the sword personally, but received it on behalf of The Franklin Institute.

The sword has been described as being part of Franklin's dress for the English court. However, the sword is of French manufacture and Franklin was received at the French court.
