This particular slug mold is used to cast a strip of lead called a slug. A slug is the spacing material placed between lines of type. Its purpose is to cast lead slugs used in spacing materials. At the end of the 19th century the linotype was invented and produced a cast line of text cast on top of a lead body that resembles a slug. These lines of text became known as a linotype slug or slug for short.
