A type gauge was one of a printer's essential tools. This article has an uneresearched history of having been used by Franklin and Benny Bache. Bache's print shop was in operation by him until his death in the 1798 Yellow Fever epidemic; the shop continued into the twentieth century, with ongoing use and addition of tools.
