The Franklin Institute's curatorial record states: "This door stop was given to Mrs. Johnston's maid by Mrs. Sarah Gillespie, who was a 'Duane' and a descendant of Benjamin Franklin. There is every reason to believe that this article is authentic Frankliniana, because upon opening the linen cover it was discovered that the weight or stop is made of lead, most likely cast by Franklin for the purpose for which it was used."
