Franklin's friend, the silversmith Philip Syng, Jr., made this bowl. It was commissioned by David Evans, a Welsh clergyman living in Pennsylvania, and an author whose work Franklin published. It is inscribed with the donor's name, and that of Franklin's daughter. It was a gift on the occasion of Sally's birth.
