  • Further Information
The image is of Franklin's head and upper body, turned three-quarters toward the viewer, with his head turned slightly further to face the viewer. His hair is loose, he wears a rust brown jacket and waistcoat, and a flowing cravat. His face wears a gentle, warm smile. The background is a varied gray-green. The inscription "BENJ. FRANKLIN. LL.D." in large capital letters was added, probably in the 19th century. Mr. Rupert Baker, Library Manager at the Royal Society, deserves sincere thanks for his assistance in the examination of this portrait and the preparation of this entry.
