The image is of Franklin's head and upper body, turned three-quarters toward the viewer, with his head turned slightly further to face the viewer. His hair is loose, he wears a rust brown jacket and waistcoat, and a flowing cravat. His face wears a gentle, warm smile. The background is a varied gray-green. The inscription "BENJ. FRANKLIN. LL.D." in large capital letters was added, probably in the 19th century.
