Not only is the size of the two paintings different, there are differences in details. The table cover is green; Franklin's suit is lilac-gray; the books and papers are varicolored.

There is some question whether this is a later copy by Martin from his sketches, or a copy of the original Martin portrait done by Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840).
