The painting is a copy by West or from his studio, of the David Martin portrait that Sellers lists as No. 3. At the time of publication of Portraiture, he gave it no more specific description than "altered copy."

It was documented in 1892 by the art historian Sir George Scharf, with a sketch and notes that were in the possession of London's National Portrait Gallery at the time of Sellers' writing.
