This portrait was painted by Wilson to serve as a model for the mezzotint by James McArdell. It is related to Wilson's earlier paintings, but the figure of Franklin is extended to "kit kat" length, a book is in his right hand, a green curtain is in the right background, and a table in the right foreground holds a roll of papers.
