This print is based on the three-quarter-length oil portrait by Benjamin Wilson (q.v.). Franklin stands in the center of the composition, before a table with a chair drawn up to it. He holds a book entitled "Electricl/Expts." In the left background, lightning strikes a town; above the town, light is shown breaking through the clouds. In the right foreground, an electrostatic machine with glass globe is added to the still life of objects in the Wilson painting. Below the image on the left: B. Wilson pinxt; on the right: Js.McArdell fecit. In the center, in script, B.Franklin of Philadelphia, and below the title the honorific letters: L.L.D. F.R.S.

National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. (NPG.77.77). Occasionally, examples become available through commercial sources.
