The spoon was bequeathed to the John Bartram Association by Dr. John B. Bartram in 1982, with a family tradition of having been given to Ann Bartram by Deborah Franklin. There are no contemporary documents to support it, but two 20th-century documents that accompanied the gift cited a continuous family tradition. Examination of the images of the spoon by a consultant in world silver increased the likelihood that the spoon is later than Franklin's period. However, this entry is being retained until the spoon's date can be confirmed. |
