Philadelphia
Ink on paper; H. 7 3/4 in. (19.7 cm), W. 6 5/8 in. (16.8 cm) Library Company of Philadelphia (Philadelphia, Pa.) This political cartoon has been called "the first symbol of a unified America" (see below). It appeared originally accompanying Franklin's editorial exhorting colonists to unite against the French along the borders; but its wider use was against what were being seen as increasing acts of oppression on the part of the British Royal government.
