The celebrated portraitist Greuze received a commission to paint an oil portrait of Franklin. This careful pastel study of his subject resulted eventually in two oil portraits, but the pastel study remained with the artist for many years. The study and the oils painted from it have been the source for countless portraits painted through the years.
