Provenance
According to correspondence with the Department of State, the portrait was "owned by Mr. Gorge [sic] E. Roberts of Winchester, Ma, for many years." It was purchased from him by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Richardson, to be given to the collections of the Department of State.

State Department records indicate that the painting was authenticated by "authorities of the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston as being an original painting of Franklin by Duplessis."
