Provenance
Owned by Simon Chaudron in 1810; purchased from him for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1811.

The committee appointed to purchase the bust for the Academy (which was then a young group of artists, the first such in the new nation) was composed of the painter Charles Willson Peale and the sculptor William Rush.
