Wright was commissioned by Richard Oswald, British peace negotiator, to paint a portrait of Franklin. Franklin was unwilling to sit to artists, and suggested to Wright, as he had to others, that Wright copy the Duplessis pastel that Franklin owned. Wright changed the color of Franklin's robe from blue to red, and the back of an upholstered chair was added.
