The bust depicts Franklin as an elderly man, with a face lined but still full. Thin hair falls to his shoulders. The sculptor has suggested that his posture is stooped. He wears a shirt with stock and ruffled jabot, and a coat with large flat buttons.

Because Franklin was still a familiar figure in Philadelphia, the sculptor would have had many opportunities to observe him without requiring a formal sitting.
