This image of Franklin's young son "Franky" is a memorial rather than a true portrait, since its subject had died of smallpox some time before it was painted. As shown in Sellers (see below) the child's pose and clothing, and the background of drapery and wooded landscape, are derived from the 1689 mezzotint of young Lord Euston by John Smith, which is after the portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller.
