Robert Edge Pine (Attributed), Edward Savage (Attributed) Oil on canvas; H. 19 3/4 in. (50.2 cm), W. 26 1/2 in. (67.3 cm) Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia, The Historical Society of Pennsylvania Collection (Philadelphia, Pa.), HSP.1904 The English-born artist Robert Edge Pine recreated the moment when members of the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence approached the desk of the President of the Congress, John Hancock, to present the document. Pine left the work unfinished on his death. His widow gave it to the painter and engraver Edward Savage to complete it. Because of its proximity to the place and the date, the painting and the engraving made from it by Savage are considered accurate depictions of the historic interior.
