Sellers, Charles Coleman, Benjamin Franklin in Portraiture (New Haven: Yale University, 1962)

Made by the artist in 1778, it was the source for his two marble busts and the plaster copies that were made by him. Following his death, a bust which is believed to be this one was sold at auction in 1828 (December 12, 1828, Lot No. 27). Bought by the notable Parisian collector François Walferdin (1795-1880), it was bequeathed by him to the Louvre.
