Dean Walker, writing in Houdon (p. 249), said that plaster busts were given by Houdon to Franklin, and that four plaster busts mentioned in a 1785 letter by William Temple Franklin are untraced. This may be one of those busts. Walker also cites G. Giacometti, Le Statuaire Jean-Antoine Houdon et son époque, who wrote that a mold was made from Houdon's terra cotta original before it was given to the Louvre in 1880, which "even forty years later could be easily confused for old versions..."
