  • Further Information
The subject of the painting is an old man, shown from the waist up, curled over a sheaf of newsprint that he holds in his right hand and reads intently. His left hand, curled into a loose fist, is shown resting on a pamphlet with a paper cover. His thin hair is gray, and falls to his shoulders. His face is ruddy, with a short growth of beard. He views the paper through pince-nez spectacles. His thick, loose coat is deep green, with a brown fur collar. A white collar is barely visible at his throat. The background is undifferentiated dark brown.
