Scanned from Sellers, Benjamin Franklin in Portraiture

  • Overview
  • Description
  • Further Information
In creating the oil portrait for which he had made a chalk study, Greuze made several changes. The format became rectangular rather than oval. Franklin's attire was altered: his dressing gown or coat was painted in green, and his linen jabot became lace. The background tone was darkened and made more even.

It is possible that the frame is contemporary with the painting; however, it has not been examined.
