Sellers, Charles Coleman, Benjamin Franklin in Portraiture (New Haven: Yale University, 1962) The painting remained in the collection of Elie de Beaumont until his death in 1786. Over 40 years later, it is believed to have been bought in Paris with provenance from Beaumont's collection, and taken to Great Britain. The buyer, one Mr. Graham, left it with his estate to his son, J.C.W.P. Graham, a Londoner. Graham left it to Henry Anson Harton, of Burton-on-Trent. Thomas B. Clarke purchased it from Harton. Mrs. Arthur Lehman, of New York, was cited as the owner of record in Sellers. (Illustrated pl.22) |
