Purchased at the sale of Benjamin West's collection in London, 1898, by Governor Pennypacker of Pennsylvania. The West attribution derives from that sale. According to a note on the reverse by Pennypacker, dated July 19, 1898, it was framed in floorboards removed from Independence Hall during an 1898 renovation. It was sold at the dispersal of Pennypacker's collection to John Wanamaker for $530, according to a news account of the sale attached to the reverse of the sketch. |
