Sellers, Charles Coleman, Benjamin Franklin in Portraiture (New Haven: Yale University, 1962)

Provenance
After Peale completed this work, the Society decided to keep the painting he had completed for them in 1772, a copy of the David Martin portrait. Peale retained this work, apparently selling it to John Barclay, the Mayor of Philadelphia (date unknown). Barclay's son, James Joseph Barclay, gave it to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in 1852.
