Commissioned and paid for by William Hodgson "of Colman Street" in London. On Hodgson's death in 1851, the work was sold. Sellers (p. 419) cites its 19th-century owners as the London printseller, Graves; then the American antiquarians and dealers Henry and Benjamin Franklin Stevens; J.S. Morgan; and, finally, William W. Corcoran of Washington, in 1885.
