Pennsylvania experienced dangerous civil unrest in 1763 and 1764, as the westward expansion of diverse groups of settlers brought them into contact with each other and the native Americans. The attack of the informal Scotch-Irish militia called the "Paxton Boys" on a tribe of peaceful Indians and their march on Philadelphia found Franklin in the midst of political controversy.
