The chair was at "Wyck," the Germantown home of the Haines family, by 1822. At that date the account book of Reuben Haines, owner of Wyck, shows an entry of the cost of "covering Benjamin Franklin's chair" at $10. A 1911 volume on Germantown history cites the tradition that the two chairs were the gift of a woman named Molly Donaldson; but at this date (2007) searches by Wyck's curator have not identified Donaldson. Further research may supply the missing information and clarify the chairs' history. |
