The document is a rectangular sheet of parchment, on which is written a Latin text recognizing Franklin's achievements and conferring on him the degree of Master of Arts. Attached to the document and hanging from it is a wide ribbon bearing a wax seal on which is impressed the seal of Harvard in red wax.

The rectangular box is of painted tinned iron, on which is painted the seal of Harvard College.
