The sculpture presents Franklin in a frontal pose, head erect, looking directly at the viewer. His shoulders are bare, and are swathed in a voluminous robe. His hair is long and rather full, falling behind his ears to rest on his shoulders. The bust is signed in the rear J.A. Houdon, 1780, and is mounted on a marble socle.
