The sketch is done with a brush, using brown ink and a brown wash, on ivory-colored laid paper. There are also traces of black chalk evident. Franklin's image resembles the portrait bust by Houdon. Inscribed lower left: "B. Franklin". The image is surrounded by a dark brown framing line, approximately 1/8-inch thick.
