Sellers, Charles Coleman, Benjamin Franklin in Portraiture (New Haven: Yale University, 1962) P. 260. not illus.
According to Sellers, the painting was owned in the second half of the 19th century by the Earl of Rosebery (1947-1929). Sold at Christie's sale of the Earl's estate on May 5, 1939 (no. 41 in the sale catalogue), it was purchased by the dealers Scott and Fowles of NY. Grenville L. Winthrop purchased it from them and willed it to Harvard University's Fogg Museum.
