The panel is printed in red on a cream-colored ground. It shows the apotheosis of Washington, with Franklin seated nearby. An oval plaque leaning against a tree is marked CATO. In the background is an angel pointing to an obelisk inscribed INDEPENDENCE / 1776.
In the lower left corner is a script signature, "Henry Gardiner / Wandsworth, Surrey. The museum's record shows that it also owns a version printed in blue (69.3187). Terms of Use Credits
