A free-standing, life-sized statue of Franklin was commissioned to stand in a niche in the facade of "Library Hall," the home of the Library Company of Philadelphia. Franklin had founded the institution as "The Junto" in 1731. Its first independent home was in a building designed by architect and physician Dr. William Thornton, that stood on Fifth Street south of Chestnut, immediately opposite the Pennsylvania State House, now called Independence Hall.
