In this sketch Franklin is represented in a landscape, seated on a broad chair or settee. He wears his characteristic simple suit and unpowedered hair, and holds a small kite on his lap. In the left background stands a woman with children. On the right a man kneels on one knee with an open box before him on the ground (a battery?). Behind him a young boy flies a kite in the open field. The verso bears a series of labels and notes that help establish the drawing's past.
