Franklin brought this miniature from France to Philadelphia as a gift for his daughter, Sarah Franklin Bache. It is derived from the Joseph Siffred Duplessis pastel portrait of which Franklin approved. The miniaturist Graincourt is known to have exhibited a miniature like this one at the 1779 Salon de la Correspondence in Paris; Sellers suggests it may be Graincourt's work.

The image is derived from the Duplessis pastel portrait, which Franklin is known to have suggested that artists copy, rather than put him - and them - through the trauma of sittings. Terms of Use Credits
