Diminutive red and white turned ivory chess pieces, and a red, black and white folding leather playing board. All of the pieces fit into an egg-shaped silver container. The surface of the cast silver container is chased and relieved with ribs and basketwork, to strengthen and ornament it. It divides into two "halves" at its widest diameter. The edges of each "half" are threaded, to permit the container to screw open or closed. Inscribed on the underside of one ivory piece is "le oeuf" (egg). The interior of the folding red leather board is colored with black and cream squares. There is gilt chasing at the center of the sides, along the edges, and marking off the divisions of the squares.
