A walnut box contains 413 brass stencils for stenciling characters of the alphabet, numbers, and ornamental devices. A secret drawer in the box contains Franklin's monogram, his carte de visite, and four wrought end and border pieces. Each stencil is now enclosed in a paper envelope with its image printed on the paper. Marked "Bery, Faiseur de Caracteres."

The American Philosophical Society owns two itemized bills for this set of stencils from Bery to Franklin, one dated December 29, 1781; the other January 12, 1782.
