On Franklin's departure from France for the United States in 1785, he was presented by King Louis XVI a miniature portrait of the king, surrounded by diamonds. The giving of such a gift to a departing dignitary was a convention, but the quality of the brooch indicates the high regard in which Franklin was held by the king.
